Time capsule: 1973 Ford Taunus GXL 2.0 V6 “Knudsen”

The first-generation Ford Taunus TC, commonly known as the “Knudsen Taunus” after Ford executive Semon E. Knudsen, arrived in 1970 and represented a major stylistic break from the previous German Ford range. The GXL sat at the top of the line, combining additional exterior brightwork and a more elaborate interior with the Cologne-built 2.0-litre V6. In this specification the engine produced around 90 PS, making the two-door GXL one of the more desirable Taunus variants of the period.

This April 1973 example is notable primarily for preservation and ownership history. The seller states that it has remained within the same family since new and has covered only 26,300 km. It is said to retain its original Ford Sapphire Light Blue Metallic paint, black vinyl roof and period interior, including the GXL instrument layout with four auxiliary gauges. The seller also describes the chrome, headliner and interior materials as original and exceptionally well preserved, and states that the car has never been smoked in. A number of unusual details — including the black side graphics and the specific GXL equipment combination — are presented as part of a very limited showroom-oriented specification, although that particular claim would be worth verifying against period Ford documentation.

The car has reportedly spent more than 25 years stored dry in a garage and has not yet been recommissioned for road use. The seller states that the engine was recently inspected internally with an endoscope, with no corrosion found and the crankshaft turning freely. The underbody and cavities are also said to have been professionally protected when the car was new and to remain unwelded, with supporting documentation. Given the long period of inactivity, the mechanical systems, brakes, fuel system, tyres and cooling system should still be inspected carefully before use. The real appeal here is the possibility of acquiring a remarkably intact, low-mileage GXL with unusually continuous provenance. Find it for sale at €59,990 (about $67,200) here in Am Berg, Austria.
