Question mark: 1972 Porsche 911 Targa

And here is one of the many puzzles we enjoy, namely a car of uncertain origin and practically unrecognizable from the photos.

Clearly, it is a 1972 911, specifically an E series (also known as Oelkappe, with the oil tank filler cap on the outside, precisely on the right rear fender, later removed due to many gas station attendants mistakenly using it as the gasoline filler cap), in the Targa version. But here lies an inconsistency.

This inconsistency is given by the engine, which, due to the red shroud and the mechanical fuel injection system, clearly belongs to an S: it is therefore a question of understanding whether the whole car is an S or just its engine. By carefully peeking at the interior photos, it is clear that the tachometer has the red line at about 6500 rpm, characteristic of the T engine. Which one is correct? The engine or the tachometer? Apart from the condition of the car, which is entirely to be restored, a single letter can make a big difference economically, and yet, even if it were a “humble” T, the engine alone would be worth the asking price. Find it for sale at $20,000 o.b.o. here in Saint Ignace, MI.
