Silver wind: 1978 Maserati Kyalami 4.9

The Maserati Kyalami sits in a difficult but interesting corner of the marque’s history. It belongs to the early De Tomaso period, derived in part from the Longchamp architecture but fitted with Maserati’s own V8 and reshaped into a more restrained grand tourer. It was never produced in large numbers, and the later 4.9-litre cars are rarer still. That gives this example a stronger basis than many obscure GTs of the period: it is not famous in the obvious way, but it has real scarcity and a clear place in Maserati’s transitional years.

This 1978 car is presented by a long-term owner who says he has had it for more than thirty years and stopped using it roughly twenty-five years ago, after which it was stored in a dry, heated underground garage. The photos show a car that appears dusty rather than derelict, with the body still straight in the limited views provided, a complete rear end, original-looking wheels, and an interior that seems preserved rather than dismantled. The odometer is said to show 64,000 km, and the seller states that the car was running properly when parked, shortly after a mechanical service. The 4.9-litre V8 specification is important here, because the seller identifies it as one of the later and rarer Kyalami versions.

There is, however, one important practical detail: the listing appears to be almost three years old. That does not automatically make it irrelevant, especially with a niche car like a Kyalami (around 220 cars made), but it changes how the ad should be read. The car may no longer be available, the owner may have changed his mind, or the price may no longer reflect the current situation. If it is still for sale, the long listing age could also suggest a narrow market rather than a weak car. The seller is unusually clear about the recommissioning process: it should leave on a trailer, the engine should not be restarted without proper checks, and the fuel, oil, water, carburettor and braking systems all need attention. If the car, documents and 4.9-litre specification check out, this remains an interesting overlooked Maserati; but the first verification is simply whether the opportunity still exists. Find it for sale at €58,000 (today $ 67,000) here in Yvelines, France.
