Low light, highly original: 1957 VW Karmann Ghia Coupé

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia has always stood apart as a beautifully sculpted coupe, blending Volkswagen’s dependable engineering with Ghia’s refined Italian styling. This 1957 example is a largely original, mostly complete survivor that has been revived after years in storage.

The seller says that this was a barn find that has since been brought back to running and driving condition. Mechanically, it has seen significant work, including new brakes, a rebuilt clutch, fresh generator brushes, a new fuel pump, carburetor, an Optima battery, clean fuel lines, and a restored gas tank. It runs and drives well, handling weekend cruises and even the occasional road trip. However, the seller notes that the horn and blinkers are inoperative, and the weatherstripping is worn.

One of the highlights of this example is its originality. The seller points out that it retains a rare Motometer triple gauge with the correct senders, early thin-back seats found only in the first-generation models, and an original Sapphire I radio. While structurally sound, there is significant rust in the outer rockers, though the heater channels and floor pan remain solid, with only minor rust under the battery and in the spare tire well. The nose has had previous damage and still requires some finishing work. Find it for sale at $20,000 here in Scotts Valley, CA.
