The GAZ-14 Chaika was one of the most exclusive Soviet-built automobiles, positioned below the large ZIL limousines reserved for the very highest level of government. Produced in very small numbers from the late 1970s through the 1980s, it was intended for senior state and party officials. Power came from a 5.5-litre V8 driving through a three-speed automatic transmission, while the specification included equipment that was exceptional by Soviet standards. Roughly 1,100 examples were produced before Chaika production was discontinued; tooling and production equipment were subsequently destroyed as part of the late-Soviet campaign against official privilege.

This 1983 example is particularly interesting because the seller reports only 2,986 km from new. The photographs show a remarkably complete car, finished in black with an unusually well-preserved period interior. The heavy velour upholstery, extensive wood-effect trim, rear privacy curtains, large central console and original controls are all present, while the engine compartment appears similarly complete. The original radio is also included. Given the extremely low indicated mileage, establishing its documentary history would be essential, but if supported, it places this car in a very different category from the more frequently seen restored or institutional-use Chaikas.

The GAZ-14 is physically imposing but technically more sophisticated than its formal appearance suggests, with independent front suspension, power assistance and a large V8 intended to move the heavy limousine with little effort. For a surviving example such as this, originality is arguably more significant than cosmetic perfection, particularly considering how few were built and how difficult model-specific trim and interior components are to replace.
