Ultra rare: 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Convertible

The 1968 L88 Corvette was designed for racing and is one of the most desirable Corvettes ever built. The factory L88 package included a high-compression 427 V8, officially rated at 430 horsepower but widely known to produce closer to 550 hp. It was equipped with heavy-duty brakes, upgraded suspension, and a Muncie M22 Rock Crusher transmission (in factory configuration) and lacked amenities such as a heater and radio, reinforcing its purpose as a race car. This 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Convertible is an extremely rare and historically significant example of American muscle, with only 80 L88 models produced that year and just 20 of them being convertibles.

Originally built for endurance racing, this Corvette spent its early years competing against Ford Cobras before being acquired in 1991 by the current owner, who sought out this specific model for restoration. After decades of storage and parts collection, the family has now decided to sell it to a buyer who can appreciate and restore it to its full potential. This Corvette’s body is reported to be in great condition, and it comes with a clear title. While the original engine is no longer present, it includes a new 427 cubic inch V8, professionally built by an engine shop, paired with a rebuilt TH400 automatic transmission. Over the years, the owner, a mechanic with over 40 years of experience, has been meticulously collecting parts for the restoration. The sale includes numerous additional components and accessories, such as an engine hoist, engine stand, tools, and a car cover.

With only 20 L88 convertibles produced, these cars are considered among the most collectible Corvettes, with fully restored, numbers-matching examples reaching seven-figure valuations at auction. While this particular car no longer retains its original engine, its rarity, race history, and well-preserved body make it a valuable candidate for a period-correct restoration. The absence of the factory powertrain lowers its collector value but does not diminish its significance as a rare and highly sought-after model. The owner welcomes serious inquiries and can provide additional details on the parts and accessories included in the sale. Find it for sale at $80,000 here near Coos Bay, OR.
