That’s not a news that Hollywood celebrities, with scarce exceptions, often used to reward themselves with an european supercar when they arrived at the top of their popularity: Ava Gardner was one of those.
Indeed she chose this HK500 (chassis HK-Z1) in the late fifties. The auctioneer says that this car was delivered new to her, and much later was owned by a guy in Burbank, CA: the dry climate for sure helped this car to remain with this beautiful patina.
The HK 500 is pushed by a mighty 6.3L Chrysler V8 which is for sure less exotic than a Ferrari V12 or a Maserati inline six of the same period, but is much more plenty of torque and power than the other two: at least this car was intended to be a luxury grand tourer, not a weekend warrior. As just said, this car has a beautiful patina and actually it should be preserved as is: we would just fix what it’s necessary to drive it safely. This car will be auctioned here in Frankfurt, Germany, on 26th of September with an estimate of €100,000-120,000 (today $113,000-135,000).
