The Chrysler Valiant Charger is one of Australia’s defining performance cars of the early 1970s. Developed specifically for the local market, it combined compact dimensions with Chrysler Australia’s Hemi inline-six engines, earning a reputation for strong performance and distinctive styling. The VJ series refined the successful VH Charger, while the Sports Pack added visual and instrumentation upgrades that have become highly desirable among collectors. Today, low-mileage, unrestored Chargers are considerably rarer than restored examples.
This VJ Valiant Charger XL Sports Pack is presented as an exceptionally well-preserved survivor finished in its original True Blue Metallic with Parchment interior. According to the seller, it was factory-equipped with the 265 cubic-inch Hemi six-cylinder, four-speed manual transmission and the optional Sports Pack. The documented ownership history traces the car through four owners, with supporting registration records, receipts and mileage documentation indicating just 29,208 kilometres from new. The photographs show an engine bay retaining numerous factory finishes and components, while the interior exhibits very little apparent wear. Particularly notable are details such as the unused ashtray and cigarette lighter, original hose clamps, GE headlamps, original Aquajet spare tyre and even the original Aquajet road tyres, which accompany a second set of wheels fitted with usable modern tyres.
Authentic low-mileage Australian muscle cars with comprehensive documentation have become increasingly difficult to find, and much of this Charger’s appeal lies in the accumulation of small original details rather than cosmetic perfection alone. As always, prospective buyers should verify the mileage history, factory specifications and originality through the accompanying documentation, but if the seller’s claims are supported, this appears to be one of the better-preserved VJ Chargers to reach the market in recent years.
