This car is already intriguing on its own, being a 1956 Spider Veloce (find another one for sale right now—if you manage to, we’ll gladly feature it), but it has an even more fascinating history.
The story of this Giulietta Spider begins on September 20, 1956, when it was produced as chassis number 194. Initially finished in Celeste (Sky Blue), the car was immediately allocated to Alfa Romeo’s Special Experimental Service (S.E.S.) as a test vehicle to help develop and refine what would become the Giulietta Spider “Veloce.” After roughly two years of extensive testing focused on engine performance and transmission developments, the car was officially registered for road use in Milan on June 30, 1958, still under Alfa Romeo’s ownership, and continued serving as a development vehicle for another year.
On April 24, 1959, Alfa Romeo sold the car to Antonio Ettore Fossati, a gentleman driver who already competed for the Milanese brand in a Giulietta Sprint, and who kept the car for approximately ten years. The second owner purchased the car on May 17, 1969, relocated it to Rimini (with new registration plates from Forlì), and kept it for another decade.
Since January 16, 1979, this Giulietta Spider has been in the possession of its current owner. During the early testing phases by Alfa Romeo, the original engine was replaced—likely due to ongoing experimental requirements—and the car received the updated transmission featuring Porsche-type synchronizers, a feature introduced into regular production by mid-1958. By the time the current owner acquired the car in 1979, the original Celeste paint had already been replaced by the classic Rosso (Red) finish it still wears today. It was not until the 1990s that the owner discovered the car’s original color and exceptional experimental history, aspects that now significantly enhance its historical and collectible value.
