Racing DNA: 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ

Some cars are not for everyone due to their value, yet they deserve to be mentioned because they are rare testimonies of a bygone era that can, now, only be perceived through black and white photos in certain books or specialized magazines. This Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ for sale is a rare find, being one of only 169 units produced. Manufactured on January 27, 1961, it was sold to Sergio Sorbi’s Smalti Firenze company on March 31 of the same year. This car quickly made its racing debut in the Coppa della Consuma in June, with Adolfo Tedeschi at the wheel, winning the Gran Turismo class up to 1300cc for Scuderia Biondetti.

Tedeschi also raced the car in the Trieste Opicina and the Ascari Trophy in Monza, finishing sixth in class. In 1963, after a brief period with Ilfo Minzoni, who won the Vergato-Cereglio hill-climb class, the SZ moved to Sicily. Emanuele Trapani entered the Targa Florio with Nicolò Lombardo for Scuderia Pegaso. In 1964, Antonino di Salvo acquired the car, racing it in the Mugello Road Circuit and the Targa Florio, though he had to retire in the latter. Giuliano Savona later finished sixth in class at the Trapani-Monte Erice race. In 1965, Francesco Santoro and Vincenzo Mirto Randazzo raced the Targa Florio but retired on the sixth lap. That year, the car received its current Messina license plate.

After changing hands several times, the current owner acquired the car in 1988, finding it in need of work and painted red instead of its original white. Following a long restoration, the car was returned to its original condition in 2011, complete with its historic yellow and blue livery. The restoration preserved as much as possible while enhancing performance with a balanced 00120 engine and an impressive exhaust system. Since its restoration, this Giulietta SZ has participated in events like the centenary of the Targa Florio in 2016. With an ACI Sport Regularity passport, an Alfa Romeo certificate of origin, and extensive documentation, this car is a significant piece of 1960s racing history. Find it for sale here in Bologna, Italy.
