The Torana GTR-X, a rare Australian marvel, stands as a testament to ingenuity and automotive artistry. Conceived by GM-H in the late 1960s, this stunning sports car was envisioned to challenge the norms of its time.
Boasting a unique combination of a fibreglass body atop a steel “ladder” chassis, reminiscent of the iconic Chevrolet Corvette, the GTR-X exuded both elegance and performance potential. Under the hood, it housed the revered XU-1 spec Holden straight-six engine, known for its prowess on both road and track. With whispers of a potential V8 variant, the GTR-X hinted at supercar status, poised to redefine Australian motoring.
However, despite its promising development, only three prototypes were ever produced, with the “Lone O’ranger” surviving to tell its tale. Rescued from obscurity by a GM-H employee in 1987, this pre-production model remained unfinished until its acquisition in the early 1990s. Now, with the option to preserve its original state or complete its restoration, including the possibility of utilizing lightweight materials like carbon fibre, the GTR-X represents the pinnacle of Australian motoring excellence.
