From the basement: 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster

This 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster offers a blend of originality and mechanical upgrades. Stored from the 1960s to 2021 in a San Francisco basement and preserved with Gibbs Oil, it was acquired by the current owner in 2024. Although the original engine and gearbox are no longer present, the car retains matching-number body panels.

Originally white over red, the Speedster now features a 1720cc big bore C motor with 40mm Solex carburetors and a C-series gearbox, both rebuilt by Vic Skirmants of 356 Enterprises. The suspension was updated with 356A-style mounts for better shock travel. The car also has 40mm drum brakes, a ZF steering box, and Technomagnesio alloy wheels with Vredestein Sprint tires.

The interior, reupholstered by Thomas Pocius, includes Evergreen vinyl with cream piping, pale green carpets, and Speedster-style seats. A rare Glaspar hardtop, restored by Fibersteel, adds a period-correct detail. In June 2024, Scott’s Independent in Anaheim performed a full service, including a new Dansk muffler, LED lighting kit, and valve and carburetor adjustments. The bare metal body shows natural patina with precise panel gaps and correct Porsche details, including beehive taillights and Speedster script. Find it for sale at $259,500 here in Emeryville, CA.
