Red special: 1970 Alfa Romeo GT Junior by Zagato

The 1970 Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior Zagato belongs to one of the most distinctive and low-volume chapters of Alfa Romeo’s post-war production. Designed at Zagato under Ercole Spada, the Junior Z departed entirely from the Bertone-bodied coupes of the 105 series, adopting a compact fastback shape with a large rear glass hatch and a focus on reduced weight and aerodynamic efficiency. The model was built on a shortened platform derived from the 1300 Spider, combining a steel structure with lightweight panels, consistent with Zagato’s design philosophy.

Production of the GT 1300 Junior Zagato is generally reported at just over 1,100 units, placing it among the rarer road-going Alfa Romeos of its period. Although produced in greater numbers than the later 1600 Junior Z, it remains a niche model with limited availability today. Based on the photos provided, this example appears complete and structurally coherent. The exterior shows an older repaint rather than a recent restoration, with visible cosmetic aging but no obvious signs of major deformation. The front end configuration, including the absence of a traditional Alfa Romeo scudetto, is consistent with Junior Z design, which featured a flat, minimalist nose without a central grille. Wheels are steel rims rather than period alloy wheels, and overall exterior details should be verified in person for condition and originality.

The interior appears to have been reupholstered in a two-tone scheme which we don’t know if original or not, and the steering wheel is aftermarket, indicating personalization rather than factory specification. The car is fitted with a black Italian license plate with orange provincial lettering, a format introduced several years after 1970 and therefore not original to the vehicle, but still much better than a new one. Find it for sale at €31,000 (today $36,000) here in Crotone, Italy.
