A ton, or rather more—about 1160 kg—is the maximum load capacity specified for this versatile van built by FIAT for 15 years, from 1957 to 1971. It played a crucial role—perhaps even more than the FIAT 500 and 600—in the Italian economic boom of that era.
This van, less “noble” than the Alfa Romeo models but equally versatile, was produced in a vast number of versions, both by the manufacturer and by numerous coachbuilders who experimented with a variety of configurations: from open and closed cargo transport to tow trucks, mixed passenger transport, and even advertising vehicles. Few have survived to the present day, as most of them were used to the point of destruction.
It is worth noting that the “1100” in the name does not correspond to the actual engine displacement. While it did in its first 1957 version, over the years, it underwent continuous displacement increases until the late 1960s. This particular model is believed to have an engine displacement of around 1500 cc. This example was clearly saved from its natural fate and has been restored in what appears to be its original color scheme (at least it seems so). The seller does not provide further details, but what we can surely say is that this was a labour of love, as the asking price is undoubtedly lower than the cost of the restoration alone. Find it for sale at €12,000 (today $12,600) here in Siderno, Italy.
