The 1953 Muntz Jet embodies the ambitious and flamboyant spirit of its creator, Earl “Madman” Muntz. This car is one of the rare remnants of an audacious attempt by a non-traditional automaker to break into the luxury car market in the early 1950s.
Originally conceived by race-car designer Frank Kurtis, the car that would become the Muntz Jet began life as the Kurtis Sport. After producing only 36 units, Kurtis sold his company to Muntz, who transformed the vehicle with significant modifications. Notably, Muntz extended the wheelbase to accommodate a back seat, converting the design from a 2-door roadster to a more family-friendly 2-door hardtop. This change aligned with Muntz’s vision of a personal luxury car for the American market. The Jet underwent several engine changes under Muntz’s direction, starting with a switch from the original Ford 239 Cubic Inch V8 to a more powerful Cadillac 331 V8, and eventually settling on a Lincoln-sourced 317.5 Cubic Inch V8 for the model currently for sale. This engine change was accompanied by a shift to a GM Hydra-Matic Automatic Transmission, enhancing the vehicle’s appeal to a broader audience by making it easier to drive.
The car’s aesthetic appeal is further enhanced by its Sunset Orange exterior, a color that accentuates its sleek lines and sporty design. The Muntz rides on wide whitewall tires, complemented by steel wheels with chrome beauty rings and hubcaps, contributing to its classic look.Inside, the Jet showcases a reupholstered interior, featuring black sport-style vinyl for the front bucket seats and rear bench, as well as the door and side panels, center console, and padded dash. The cabin is completed with a black carpet and a beautifully preserved engine-turned instrument cluster that includes an array of gauges and a clock, all reflecting the luxury and attention to detail that were hallmarks of Muntz’s vision.
