Rare hatchback: 1975 Renault 16 TX

Have you ever seen one? No? We’re not surprised—this is a model that has become extremely rare and is hardly ever spotted, even at major classic car gatherings.

A remarkable example of one of France’s most innovative family cars of the 1970s, this 1975 Renault 16 TX offers an authentic glimpse into the past, preserved and maintained by the same family for many years. The car remains largely original, with its factory paint still present and showing only minor signs of age, and it stands out for its unusually rich level of equipment—especially for the time. The Renault 16 was introduced in 1965 as a innovative concept: a front-wheel-drive hatchback with the practicality of a station wagon and the comfort of a limousine. By the time the TX version arrived in 1973, the model had reached full maturity. The TX was the most luxurious and powerful variant of the series, fitted with a 1.6-liter engine and a five-speed gearbox—mounted on the steering column in true French fashion.

This particular TX stands out for its well-preserved velour interior, still plush and visually appealing, and for its completeness: all trims, switches, and fittings appear present and correct. The vehicle also benefits from significant recent mechanical work, including a complete brake system overhaul, new tires, and the addition of a four-speaker audio system with Bluetooth radio—adding discreet modern comfort without compromising its classic charm. As a range-topping version, this Renault 16 TX features a list of period-correct features that would have been considered advanced, if not luxurious, in 1975. These include factory-tinted windows, electric windows on all four doors, rear window curtains, and a rear wiper with washer. The exterior is enhanced by Gordini-style wheels and a period rear spoiler, lending a subtle sporty note to the car’s otherwise elegant and understated silhouette. The car has even gained some recognition from classic car enthusiasts, having appeared in a vintage car magazine—a sign of its collector appeal and rare condition. The current owner is also reportedly negotiating the inclusion of a large number of spare parts accumulated over the years, which adds significant value and practicality for any future buyer. Find it for sale at €7,500 (today $8,800) here in Sona, Italy.
