Patina Monster/11: 1960 DKW 1000 Coupé by Fissore

In recent years, many have abused the term “patina,” using it to describe what are essentially wrecks. In this case, however, the term seems entirely appropriate.

We’re looking at an exceptional condition for an equally rare car: a DKW 1000 Coupé built by Fissore, the renowned coachbuilder from Piedmont, commissioned by the German manufacturer. It’s equipped with a two-stroke, three-cylinder engine that, thanks to its configuration, could produce over 60 hp with a sound reminiscent (on a smaller scale) of a high-revving race car.

The seller states that this coupé, originally sold new in Rome and always owned by a single individual, has never undergone a full restoration. Despite the “patinated” appearance, the body is solid and straight. The car has only received the necessary work to make it roadworthy again. It’s clear that the interior has been reupholstered—almost certainly in the original color. Additionally, this example still sports its original black Roma license plates and even the DKW Italia badge from the dealership where it was purchased. Find it for sale at €29,000 (today $33,000) here in Torino, Italy.

  1. I know this car, I followed the cleaning/recommissioning steps of the recent “resurrection”.

The interior trim was only professionally cleaned, not reupholstered. This a statement for the high quality fabric Fissore used in this rare car. And also a confirmation of the care the car received from its long-life owner.
