Hen’s teeth: 1937 Singer 9 HP Sports Coupé

This rare car belongs to the Singer Le Mans series, which was produced between 1933 and 1937 as a lightweight sports car with a strong racing pedigree.

This is an exceptionally rare variant. While Singer produced many (in reletive terms, of course) open-top Le Mans models, the Coupé version was built in extremely limited numbers, with estimates suggesting fewer than 50 units were produced and, as the seller states, 2 or 3 are known to survive. Designed as a closed-body alternative to the roadster, it featured a fixed roof and enhanced aerodynamics, catering to a niche market seeking a blend of sportiness and refinement. The catalog of the time lists a price of £210. If that seems low, consider that in 1937, this amount was equivalent to 1.2 times the average annual salary in the UK at the time.

This car is clearly in need of restoration, but it appears that some partial work has already been carried out. As one might expect, the most important thing is to determine whether all the necessary components for rebuilding the vehicle are present, to avoid any surprises. The engine bay seems fairly complete, but at least from the photos, the same cannot be said for the interior and exterior. Find it for sale at $16,900 here in Los Angeles, CA.
