Expensive hunch: 1948 Fiat 1100S Gobbone

The Fiat 1100 S, introduced in 1947, was designed as a sports car for the 1100cc class, popular in events such as the Mille Miglia. It features a 1,089 cc inline-four engine producing approximately 51 horsepower, with a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph). The two-seater aerodynamic body was manufactured by Fiat’s Carrozzerie Speciali under Giuseppe Cogno, earning the nickname ‘Gobbone’ due to its hunchback-style rear design.

This specific vehicle was built on September 21, 1948, and delivered to its first owner in Milan on November 30, 1948. Originally finished in green with a leather interior, the car retains its Berlinetta coachwork. It was later sold in Milan in 1950 to Faustino Campostella, who raced the car in multiple events. The car’s racing history includes participation in the Mille Miglia (1953-1955), the Giro di Sicilia (1954), and the Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti (1954). Results include 9th in class at the 1953 Mille Miglia and 5th in class at the 1954 Giro di Sicilia. Period photos and Mille Miglia documents accompany the car.

Restoration work includes a gearbox rebuild in 2018 and extensive preparation for the 2019 Mille Miglia. From 2020 to 2023, €60,000 was spent on further restoration by Strada e Corsa in the Netherlands. The car is registered with the Registro Mille Miglia and includes a Fiat Certificato di Origine, FIVA Class A3 Passport, and documentation of its ownership and race history. Find it for sale at €485,000 (today $500,000) here in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, Netherlands.
