Not many people know that before introducing this car, Alfa held a contest to choose a name for it. The name “Duetto” won and was initially given to the car, but it was soon removed because it was claimed by a confectionery company that had already registered the name for one of its snacks.
Fun fact aside, this was a successful series of Alfa Romeo Spiders, which began in 1966 with the 1600, followed by the 1300 (to lower the price), and finally the 1750, the top of the range and still the most sought after today. Many were exported to the USA, particularly in the SPICA fuel-injected version, like this example, which has been owned by the same person for 40 years.
The seller mentions that the car underwent a “refitting” around 20 years ago, but has always been kept in a garage, and the car’s condition, at least from the photos, confirms this. The transmission has been rebuilt, and the original engine has benefited from many new parts. We wouldn’t classify it as a concours-level car, but it appears to be a very nice example at a price, for once, that isn’t outrageous. Find it for sale at $41,500 here in Walnut Creek, CA.
