Silver Biscione: 1957 Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS by Touring

The Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS is a quintessential example of automotive craftsmanship and elegance. Handbuilt by Touring of Milan, the all-aluminum body of this 1900 CSS significantly reduces its curb weight, offering a nimble driving experience. Paired with the legendary 1.9-liter four-cylinder, twin cam engine, this Alfa Romeo is a fantastic specimen.

Inside, the car provides ample legroom, comfortably accommodating drivers up to six feet tall. This spacious interior makes it an ideal candidate for long-distance tours and prestigious events such as the Mille Miglia and Copperstate 1000, for which it is fully eligible. This particular Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS looks virtually new, having undergone a meticulous, multi-year restoration with only test miles since its completion.

The restoration began with the removal of the aluminum body shell from the steel “birdcage” support chassis. The seller says that he body, in excellent condition, required minimal work and retained its original hand-formed character. It was refinished in period-correct argento chiaro metallizzato with a striking rosso scuro roof, resulting in breathtaking paintwork. The steel chassis was sandblasted, rusted areas were replaced, and it was painted in red oxide followed by satin black, as per the original specifications. The suspension was fully restored, including new bushings, brake parts, Koni red “classic” shocks, and a professionally balanced driveshaft. Under the hood, the correct 1308 type engine was rebuilt with new pistons, valve springs, and carburetors. The transmission, clutch, radiator, and driveshaft received comprehensive restorations. The interior boasts new German wool carpet, leather upholstery, and a correct grey wool headliner. The dashboard retains its original switchgear, and all gauges were professionally rebuilt. New wiring, lighting, and a Nardi steering wheel complete the exquisite interior restoration. It’s hard to find a better specimen. Find it for sale at $259.000 here in Los Angeles, CA.
