Bronze rarity: 1953 Alfa Romeo 1900C Sprint Supergioiello by Ghia

The Alfa Romeo 1900, affectionately known as Millenove, marked a significant milestone for the Italian automaker post-World War II. Production of this model began in Portello in 1950, with its debut at the Paris Motor Show, featuring the latest design by Orazio Satta. The 1900 series succeeded the stunning Alfa 6C but introduced a new inline-four engine with two overhead camshafts and DOHC distribution, maintaining Alfa’s reputation for sporty, high-performance vehicles.

Its reception was enthusiastic, and a year later, the Corto version with a shorter wheelbase was introduced. Renowned Italian coachbuilders, including Ghia, created numerous beautiful variants. According to H.-Jürgen Döhren’s book “Millen’s Sprint, Super Sprint and more” (2016), only 20 units of the Supergioiello version were produced, with only three known to exist today. The 1900C coupe with chassis number 01549, produced in 1953, was initially delivered to Gumersind Garcia Fernandez of Spain. Fernandez participated in several races, including the first Rally de los Pirineos and the 1955 Monte-Carlo Rally. After a series of ownership changes, the car was involved in an accident, leading to the replacement of its original complex Ghia front end with a simpler Touring front end.

In 1990, historian Pablo Gemino purchased the car, confirmed its racing history, and documented its journey. The vehicle changed hands again, landing with a prominent Portuguese collector who restored it to its original form with the help of DIno Cognolato in Italy. The restored Alfa was showcased at the Auto e Moto d’Epoca fair in Padua in 2016 and later at the Retro Classics in Stuttgart, where it was thoroughly inspected and subsequently sold to a Czech collector. The 1900C Sprint “Supergioiello” made its way to the Czech Republic just in time for the Chateau Loučeň Concours d’Elegance in 2017, winning second place in the post-war cars category. It had already claimed victory at the Essen Motor Show 2016’s elegance competition. Find it for sale here in Křenovice, Czech Republic.
