Born again: 1950 Fiat 1100 S by Pininfarina

The owner of this stunning example asked us to feature it, and we are pleased to do so, as the work performed on this car is truly remarkable, with extreme attention paid to every detail. The restoration began from a fairly complete base, yet it required a considerable effort to achieve the result you can admire today.

Among postwar Italian automobiles, few capture the transition from pure racing intent to refined grand touring style as gracefully as the Fiat 1100S Pinin Farina Coupé. Produced from 1949 to 1951, this model marked the evolution of the highly competitive Fiat 1100S Mille Miglia racer into a more sophisticated road car. The example here, chassis 1100S500346, is one of just fifty-two Pinin Farina-bodied cars built, and only around seventeen are known to survive. Beautifully restored in a green-on-green color scheme, it showcases the elegant fastback lines that would later influence icons such as the Lancia Aurelia B20. The car retains numerous authentic details—correct Veglia gauges, Pinin Farina visors, semaphores, and rare period trim—painstakingly sourced by its current owner.

Mechanically, it features a reworked 1100B engine fitted with a Cisitalia-style head, twin carburetors, and a custom exhaust, echoing the spirit of the small-displacement sports racers that defined Italy’s automotive renaissance. The restoration, completed with meticulous attention to originality, included refinishing the rust-free body in metallic green and reupholstering the cabin in dark green vinyl to match the elegant exterior. Chrome details, from the grille to the wheel discs, complete the period-correct presentation.

As a seminal Pinin Farina design, the 1100S represents one of the earliest collaborations between Fiat and Pinin Farina, setting the stage for a partnership that would influence Italian (and not only) automotive styling throughout the 1950s. A full and detailed account of this car’s provenance and restoration process can be found on the seller’s website, where each phase of its history and reconstruction is thoroughly documented. 1. As the seller has technical issues, we report this comment on his behalf:

“@sagittariotpm has good eyes; that is a Touring logo on the ashtray. He is correct in that it should be crossed flags, but the ashtrays themselves are identical. I had that ashtray in my stock and always wondered if people would catch that detail? Easy enough to change! Thanks again.”
