Rare hardtop: 1959 D.B. Panhard Le Mans Luxe

Panhard, originally Panhard et Levassor, stands as one of automotive history’s most innovative marques. Established in 1886, the French automaker began vehicle production in 1890, consistently introducing groundbreaking ideas. Its remarkable achievements include the first front-engine automobile in 1891, the 1934 Panoramique with curved glass, and the sophisticated 1936 Dynamique featuring a self-supporting steel body, aerodynamic design, and centralized steering.

Post-1946, Panhard specialized in efficient two-cylinder high-performance engines with torsion-bar valve closures. The company later introduced the first mass-produced aluminum-bodied car in 1954 and the CD model in 1962, achieving a remarkable aerodynamic drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.22. Citroën, recognizing Panhard’s pioneering technologies, acquired the brand in 1965 and integrated its innovations before discontinuing it in 1967.

The featured D.B. Panhard Le Mans Luxe was created by renowned engineers Charles Deutsch and René Bonnet, who developed sports cars under the D.B. (Deutsch-Bonnet) brand using Panhard components. This meticulously maintained example comes from a dedicated collector specializing in Panhard models, boasting a rare original hardtop—a highly sought-after option among collectors. It is powered by the desirable 954 cc sport-spec engine featuring twin spark plugs per cylinder and contactless ignition. This car recently completed a successful drive from Bordeaux to Berlin. Included are both soft and rare hardtop options, along with a fresh inspection and historic certification. Find it for sale at €49,000 (today $53,000) here in Berlin, Germany.
