Among the countless variants of Volkswagen’s iconic Typ 2, few are as unusual—and today as coveted—as the Doka, the Doppelkabine double-cab pickup. Introduced in the late 1950s for Volkswagen’s own factory logistics, the Doka combined the practicality of a work truck with the ability to carry an entire crew in the front cabin. These were hard-working vehicles, used intensively and often discarded early, which is why surviving examples are scarce and well-preserved or properly rebuilt ones are truly sought after. This 1961 model is one of those rare exceptions.
The example offered here, originally from California and now in France, wears the correct Dove Blue (L31) and has been transformed into something far beyond its utilitarian origins. Its heart is a 2,110cc engine with EMPI 44 dual carburetors, EMPI crank and camshaft, and a Vintage Speed exhaust—over 130 horsepower for a vehicle born with barely 30–40 hp. Paired with a long-ratio “Motorway Flyer” gearbox, it can exceed 160 km/h, an almost surreal figure for a T1. Cooling has been upgraded with an external oil radiator and electric fan, while the suspension has been lowered with a Sway-A-Way kit and adjustable shocks. Completing the mechanical upgrades are 15” “Crows” steel wheels, a Safari kit, an automatic fire-suppression system, a battery cut-off switch, full Lanoguard rust protection, and a completely modernized electrical system.
Despite the enhanced performance, the truck retains its four drum brakes, a charming and dangerous reminder of its original character. Visually, it maintains an authentic presence, enriched by a Cyclops headlamp with a custom-shaped roof rack and a body that is truly rust-free—rare qualities, especially considering that early Doka models, produced only from 1958 in much lower numbers than the Microbus or Kombi, are notoriously hard to find in solid condition. The interior reflects its Californian past. The upholstery was crafted by a Los Angeles coachbuilder using the same fabric found on the city’s fast trains—durable and full of personality. Comfort should be high: heated front bench with independent controls, sound-insulated cabin, Bluetooth head unit with four speakers and an amplified subwoofer, central armrest with integrated iPhone charger, and a continuously active rear-view camera replacing the central mirror. New rollover hoops are installed as well, and a custom cover is included, available in beige or black. Find it for sale at €60,500 (today $70,000) here in Ayette, France.
